Frank at Home the Farm, Pt. 1 (Original Soundtrack Album)

The first original soundtrack album of the mystery comic book series Frank at Home the Farm will come out this November 21st! (2021) It will be available on most major platforms: Spotify / Tidal / Amazon Music / YouTube Music / etc.

This will be the first of four album releases and is the culmination of a project that started back in 2019 when myself and Jordan (the writer) started playing around with the idea of scoring a scene from the comic.

How it came about

We originally started with a scene from edition one where Frank is tormented by memories of The Great War and spooky visions of canibalistic animals. They seep into his dreams in quite a disturbing manner.

Jordan had actually asked for background music inspired by the scene but I misunderstood and thought he was looking for a score to the scene, like a film score.

After creating a very much tailored score, we both really liked what was happening, saw there was a lot of potential there and decided to score the whole thing! Then, we started experimenting with the presentation. Wanting to stay faithful to the genre and not turn it into something else, I opted for a collection of pans and zooms to simply guide the reader through the action, rather than getting too animated. The result is a kind of still / silent film in the dimension of a comic book.

The Music

The tracks have been described as having "a whimsical quality to them, but still feeling ominous, like we're waiting for the other shoe to drop". (The Comic Book Yeti) Throughout the series, there is a dark underlying sense of mystery which I felt was very important for the music to capture. But then there are also quirky little humorous moments that needed a slight shift in mood.

The role and presence of music in this media form is undoubtedly different to a film or series, maybe most notably for the lack of diegetic sounds (sounds that emanate from the story world). Tailored music for comics is still quite novel but there is definitely a lot of potential there!

I’ve gone back and remixed / remastered all the tracks for this release and I’m really happy with how it’s all sounding.
